Our City
An Agent of Change for Our City
Change is in the air, and on the ground. From the transformation of the Hudson Waterfront to the soon-to-be-developed West Side, NJCU is dynamically reshaping the landscape of Jersey City.
Athletics Renovation and Expansion
We are embarking on a visionary renovation and expansion of our athletics facilities that will transform the way communities, universities and athletic departments engage and interact. At the centerpiece of this ambitious initiative will be a state-of-the-art, 131,000 square-foot center that will integrate athletic, fitness, healthcare, eSports, dining, entertainment and education spaces in a single facility. In addition, Courtney J. Franchionne Field (aka Metro Field) will be transformed to be used by Jersey City’s recreation programs, from Babe Ruth Baseball to softball to flag football — this complex will become multidimensional, including serving as home to NJCU’s softball program.
University Place
We have been working with Jersey City to create University Place, a $400 million public-private partnership redevelopment project that will revitalize the city's West Side.
In 2016, the West Campus Village Residence Hall opened there, doubling our capacity to house residential students. And, in 2018, RIVET opened. This building features modern market-rate apartments and 10,000 square feet of retail space.
Much more is still to come. We are bringing spaces for education, arts, shopping, dining, outdoor events, farmer's markets—and with all that, jobs—to the local community.
Hudson Waterfront
NJCU moved its School of Business to a 70,000-square-foot renovated building on Jersey City's Hudson Waterfront in 2015, supporting the awe-inspiring downtown transformation.
The building features cutting-edge technology, a simulated trading floor, and stunning views of lower Manhattan and provides students with easy access to the New York City Financial District and partnerships with nearby businesses such as JPMorgan, Provident Bank, and Wyndham Hotels.
Jersey City Mural Arts Project Sponsorship
We are dedicated to supporting the arts and contributing to projects that further Jersey City's reputation as a desirable place to be. In 2019, we found an innovative way to do this: partnering with the Jersey City Arts Mural Project to sponsor 12 murals by world-renowned artists that you can now see all over the city.
Sustainability
Even as we grow, we are shrinking our carbon footprint.
We get more and more of our food from sustainable sources. We've reduced water waste. We've added solar power and other initiatives to bring down energy use and reduce pollution. We are seeking LEED certification for new building projects. We've improved recycling practices.
Plus, as an academic institution, our students conduct urban environmental research and we can boast that we offer more than 48 courses on sustainability related topics.
