NJCU to Host NJCU National Security Annual Symposium on July 13

JERSEY CITY, N.J. | The Department of Professional Security Studies will host its NJCU National Security Annual Symposium on Thursday, July 13, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in a hybrid format. The theme for the 2023 symposium is 鈥淐aring for Veterans: Current Issues and Policy Challenges.鈥

The event will be held on campus with limited seating available for panelists and invited industry guests in NJCU鈥檚 Gilligan Student Union Building鈥檚 Multipurpose Room B on the second floor of the facility. A virtual format is also available for other guests and the general public by pre-registering at .

The event will be hosted by Dr. Juste Codjo, assistant professor of security studies in NJCU鈥檚 Department of Professional Security Studies and the director of NJCU鈥檚 one-of-a-kind Civil Security Leadership, Management, and Policy (CSLMP) Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) program. previously taught at the American University, University of Kentucky, and Kansas State University.

The keynote speaker will be , the Chief Executive Officer of Forge Health. Golnick is a U.S. Navy veteran and the CEO of Forge Health, a mental health organization that he co-founded after his own experience overcoming trauma from military service. After finishing his time in the Navy, Golnick worked as a senior foreign policy analyst and directly with the President鈥檚 National Security Council, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the U.S. Congress on many topics regarding U.S. foreign policy. Since 2016, he has opened multiple outpatient mental health treatment facilities across the country specifically for Veterans, First Responders, and their families. In his current role, he has testified before Congress and other government agencies on multiple issues dealing with veteran and first responder healthcare. In May 2023, Golnick gave the commencement speech and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Miami.

The event will begin with opening remarks at 9 a.m., followed by a faculty research panel at 9:20 a.m. Golnick will make his remarks and presentation as the keynote speaker at 10 a.m. The event will conclude with a doctoral student poster panel discussion.

NJCU offers the first Doctorate of Science in Civil Security Leadership, Management and Policy in the U.S. NJCU鈥檚 CSLMP doctoral program allows students to study, improve, and develop best practices in civil security with lessons in national security, emergency management, cyber security and defense, homeland security, information assurance, crisis communications, criminal justice, and strategic planning. Together these areas of Civil Security constitute core necessities for improving community resiliency and solving complex challenges and threats that local, state, regional, national, and international policymakers and leaders must confront. Completion of this advanced degree prepares one to assume executive-level responsibilities within government, business or education and to become post-secondary educators.
